Of the five villages in Farlam Parish, Hallbankgate being central to the coal and other activities of the Earl of Carlisle namely the quarries, lime and shale production. grew into to largest village and remains so today.

As the largest village, the amenities, schools, shop, inn and village hall etc. all migrated to Hallbankgate to survive.
